About the HerStart: Innovate the Future Program
HerStart: Innovate the Future is an initiative designed to foster gender-equitable economic development in Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda. The program provides aspiring women entrepreneurs with training and mentorship in social enterprise, gender-responsive business planning, impact measurement, and access to finance. Canadian volunteers contribute to the program through on-site placements and capacity-building initiatives with local partners.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Country Manager, the Operations and Finance Manager will be responsible for ensuring the efficient financial and operational management of the HerStart program in Zanzibar. The role involves overseeing financial performance, human resources, procurement, compliance, and program quality improvements. This position requires a highly skilled, motivated, and detail-oriented professional with a strong commitment to youth empowerment and gender equality.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Management
- Oversee and enhance organizational systems and processes, ensuring compliance with YCI policies and procedures.
- Support the Country Manager in human resource management, including recruitment, performance evaluations, and staff contracts.
- Plan and coordinate logistics for Canadian volunteer placements, including arrival procedures, accommodation, and transportation.
- Organize and facilitate in-country volunteer orientations.
- Manage administrative and logistical components related to office operations, volunteer accommodations, and visa renewals.
- Ensure YCI remains compliant with NGO registration requirements and evolving regulations in Zanzibar.
- Oversee health, safety, and security risk management for staff, volunteers, and partners.
Financial Management
- Ensure compliance with donor regulations and internal financial policies.
- Prepare and submit high-quality financial reports, manage cash flow, payroll processing, tax payments, and contributions.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and provide financial oversight to ensure cost-effective project implementation.
- Work closely with technical teams to align program activities with financial planning.
- Identify and mitigate financial risks while ensuring accountability and compliance with audits and regulatory filings.
Technical Support and Training
- Provide onboarding, training, and ongoing support to project staff, volunteers, and partners on finance, operations, and human resources procedures.
- Support the Country Manager in project management and strategic decision-making.
- Ensure financial literacy and accountability among staff and partner organizations.
Volunteer Management
- Supervise international volunteers, ensuring their contributions align with program goals.
- Provide coaching and mentorship to enhance their professional development and integration into the HerStart program.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate should possess:
- Minimum five years of progressive leadership experience in finance, operations, procurement, or human resources.
- Strong financial management and accounting expertise, including experience with organizational budgeting and donor compliance.
- Proven ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance stakeholders.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
- Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (preference for candidates with Kiswahili proficiency).
- Strong understanding of sustainable community development and gender equality initiatives.
- Experience in supporting or working with volunteers is an advantage.
- Tanzanian citizenship or permanent residency (preference for residents of Zanzibar).
